REVIEW:
"From
Ziriguiboom, the Brazilian label that gave us last year's revolutionary
BossaCucaNova, comes a remarkable debut album, Sao Paulo Confessions
(Zir 03) by expatriate Yugoslav musician-producer Suba. A student
of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, native Indian music and jazz, he
has lived in the bustling South American megalopolis of Sao
Paulo for the past ten years. His music is a blend of tropical
textures and electronic programming overlaid with Astrud Gilberto-esque
vocals by the 21-year-old singer Cibelle. Most of the compositions
are Suba's own, with the notable exception of the Jobim/ Moraes
classic Felicidade. Those intrigued by the Modernist new wave
of Brazilian music will welcome Suba's record as a further example
of an emergent style that is fast becoming recognized as the
shiny new soundtrack to Latin American life in the Nineties."
